101 Romantic Cheap Dates

People are always like, “Herb, you’re a romantic guy, where should I take my wife for a date?” To which I usually answer, “You’re married? Get outta town, buddy!” But all jokes aside, my partner and I have been together for 15 years and though it’s difficult for us to go out all the time, we make sure our dates are as special as can be.

Some of our dates involve fine dining and spending time together, but sometimes we go on the cheap. We go on nature hikes or rent a tandem bike and ride around the park. Other times, we’ll just grab some hot dogs and sit by the lake to watch the ducks. These ideas for a romantic date are simple, yet, but effective. The key is just about continuing to fall in love with the person you’re with.

The way that we’re raised, people think that romantic evenings have to be spent at restaurants with hard to pronounce names, eight courses and, quite possibly, a limo ride.  Yes, Cary Grant was suave, but would he work in a modern context?  Probably not.

These days, the gender roles have evened out quite a bit. One of the best and most fun dating ideas I’ve had was to take my girlfriend to the batting cages. Yes, the batting cages.

During college, my girlfriend played for her school’s softball team and gained regional attention. I, on the other hand, spent my days waxing intellectual about Star Wars. I knew she missed her halcyon days of playing ball greatly, so one day, we drove out of town to one of the best batting cages in the state. She had no idea and was surprised! Of course, she hit far more balls than I did, but she appreciated the fact that I was able to weather an activity that I have zero interest in for her. I definitely hit a home run in her heart that night.

A first date can be scary as well as thrilling. Prepare yourself well by choosing what to wear in advance. Choose something really nice so you can make a good impression. Take special notice of your hygiene as well by making sure you take a shower and brush your teeth before leaving for your date.

 I recently made an ice cream cake “to die for” as my hairdresser said.  I came home and had it made in less then 30 min.  It was FANTASTIC!!  Your date will think so also.  Make it the day before as the cake must freeze overnight.  Here is the recipe.

ICE CREAM CAKE

1 Package Oreo’ s- reg filled

½ stick butter

1 Lg jar chocolate fudge topping

1 square box vanilla ice cream

1- 8 oz whipped topping

Place 1 Pkg Oreo’s in large plastic bag and using rolling pin make then into crumbs. Place in bowl and mix with ½ stick of butter. Remove ¾ cup and save for topping. Press crumbs in bottom of 11×13 dish.

Open ice cream box and slice into 1 inch thick slices. Place slices over crumb layer like a puzzle. Rub finger over joints to smooth.

Heat chocolate fudge topping in microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir and pour over ice cream layer.

Spread whipped topping over fudge layer.

Sprinkle remaining crumbs over whipped topping layer.

Freeze over night.

Cut into servings.

VERY RICH but YUMMY

Variations could be Chocolate chip mint ice cream, Tin roof sundae ice cream and caramel topping

Vanilla waffle filled wafflers rather the Oreo’s, strawberry ice cream and strawberry topping.  Use your imigination and see what other flavores your can come up with.  Enjoy this wonderful decadent dessert.
